Mayor of Alsager

Mayor of Alsager Town Council

28 June 2023

At its meeting held on 27 June 2023, Alsager Town Council voted to change the style of the Chairman of the Council from Chairman to Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Alsager Town Council. The differences are that of title, but a Town Mayor has the same rights and duties as a local Council Chair.

Under the Local Government Act 1972 s.245 (4a), a parish that has the status of a Town is entitled to use the style of Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor for its Chairman and Vice Chairman.  Alsager is almost the last town in Cheshire East Council Borough to make the move, with Middlewich, Sandbach, Bollington and Poynton making the change over the past couple of years. Only Handforth Town Council retains the style of Chairman, having recently moved from a Parish Council to a Town Council.

Councillor Jane Hearne, the Mayor of Alsager and Cllr Michael Unett, Deputy Mayor of Alsager commented that they hope to use the change to work with the community to increase the civic pride in the town.

There will be no cost to the tax payer as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman already have civic regalia.
