Alsager Town Council is delighted to announce that Hilary Baxter, who for over four decades has made an exceptional and unique contribution to the community of Alsager through her unwavering commitment to animal welfare and the care of vulnerable animals, has been awarded Honorary Freewoman of Alsager.
The Town Council unanimously approved this award at a Council meeting held on 11 September 2026. This award will be presented by the Mayor, Cllr Pauline Hubbard on 22 October 2026 at 3:00p.m. in Alsager Civic.
The award has been bestowed on Hilary Baxter due to exceptional services to the town and people of Alsager and commitment to animal welfare as follows:
Hilary Baxter has been the driving force behind Alsager Animals in Need, a charity founded in 1987 that has become one of the town’s most respected and valued community organisations. Through her leadership, dedication and compassion, countless stray, abandoned, neglected and unwanted animals have been rescued, cared for and successfully rehomed throughout Alsager and the surrounding area. The charity provides shelter, veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and ongoing support to animals in need, whilst ensuring that all prospective homes are carefully assessed to safeguard the welfare of every animal placed in its care.
Under her stewardship, Alsager Animals in Need has grown into a highly respected local charity supported by dozens of volunteers and serving communities across Cheshire East, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. The charity’s impact over the years has been remarkable, having rehomed thousands of dogs and cats whilst maintaining a policy that places animal welfare at the heart of every decision.
The impact of Hilary’s work cannot be measured solely by the thousands of animals she has helped. Her efforts have enhanced the reputation of Alsager as a caring and compassionate community, bringing together volunteers and supporters from across the town, and demonstrated the very highest ideals of public service, kindness and civic responsibility.
In recognition of her outstanding service to the community, her exceptional commitment to animal welfare for more than forty years, and her lasting contribution to the social fabric and reputation of Alsager, Alsager Town Council is proud and honoured to present this award to Hilary Baxter who is eminently deserving of being granted Freedom of the Town.
